Obituary

“I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Finally, there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will give to me on that day, and not to me only, but also to all who have loved His appearing.”

II Timothy 4:7-8

The evening of June 6, 2022, God called into His heavenly Kingdom His daughter, Barbara Jean Martin Norris.

Barbara was the second of four girls born to the late Evelyn and Oliver Martin, Jr. on May 10, 1949 in Oscar, La.

Barbara was educated in New Roads, La at St. Augustine Catholic Elementary School and graduated from Rosenwald High School in 1968. She graduated from Southern University with a bachelor’s degree in education. She taught elementary school in Avoyelles, Pointe Coupee and East Baton Rouge parishes for many years.

Barbara was a member of New Life Worship Center in New Roads, La. She was a resilient woman of God that never wavered in her faith, even with her many health challenges throughout the years.  She enjoyed shopping with her daughter and granddaughters and traveling with the love of her life, Alton.  She loved watching/listening to her Jaguars on Saturdays and watching her Saints on Sundays.  She enjoyed her special requested meals prepared by her son in law, Oris.

Barbara leaves to cherish her memory, a loving and dedicated husband Alton Norris of Baker, La; a devoted daughter and son in law, Tonya and Oris Williams of Baker, La; two sons by marriage: Alton Brett Norris (April) of Dallas, TX and Corey Norris, Sr. (Rebecca) of Alamogordo, NM; Eight grandchildren: Allayia, Madison, Theodore, Anthony, Andre, Corey Jr., Zemirah and Harmony; One sister in law, Doris Norris of New Roads, La; Four brothers in law: Andrew Martin, Albin Norris, Ernest Norris all of New Roads, La and Roosevelt Norris of Maringouin, La; Forever brother in law, Roosevelt Jarrett of Baker, La; Two special nieces: Chelette Jarrett and Daria Martin both of Zachary, La; Great nephew, Axel Green of Zachary, La; Four godchildren: Demetrius Wilson, Denise Zeno both of Baton Rouge, La, Keisha Martin-Carr of Lathrop, Ca and John Alton Martin of Atlanta, Ga; Longtime friend and confidant, Peggy Theodore of New Roads, La;  Special cousin that was like a sister, Carol Jean Veal of Baton Rouge, La; a host of other relatives and friends.
