Henry Joseph Mitchell, a lifelong resident of Baton Rouge, LA departed this life on March 28, 2020 after a battle with Parkinson Disease at the age of 80. Henry was a loving husband, father, and devoted grandfather and a diehard New Orleans Saints Fan.
He was born April 18, 1939, in St.Martinville, LA. to the loving union of the late Antoine J. and Mary G. Mitchell.
Henry was one of six children and the youngest son. He attended Notre Dame Catholic Church as a youth where he served as an Alter Boy. He was a 1958 graduate of Holy Rosary Institute in Lafayette, LA where he was a star basketball and baseball player. He then moved to Baton Rouge and attended Southern University where studied Graphic Arts.
He served in the US Army and spent countless hours as a volunteer at the Louisiana War Veterans Home in Jackson, LA
He was an active member of St. Charles Borremo Catholic Church where he served as President of the Usher Board and member of the Men’s Club. He is a lifelong member of the Knights of Columbus, Istrouma Council number 2807and obtained rank of Fourth Degree. Upon the closing of St. Charles, he joined St. Gerald Majella Catholic Church where he continued to support his church community.
He retired from the Capital Area United Way with over 30 years of service, and continued to work as Operations Manager for ICI. He stayed active by volunteering at Baton Rouge General Hospital and Cancer Services of Greater Baton Rouge.
He enjoyed cooking Sunday dinners for his children and grandchildren, traveling, and going to New Orleans Saints Games.
He leaves to cherish his memories his wife of 56 years Eva Martinez Mitchell; Two Daughters; Melissa Mitchell Jackson, Baton Rouge, LA, Kimberly Mitchell Chapman (Charles Sr.) Paulina, LA and one son; Ronnie Terrell Mitchell Sr., Baton Rouge, LA; Three Grandchildren; Charles Chapman Jr., Reagan Chapman and Ronnie Terrell Mitchell Jr.; one Sister; Morena Briscoe (Ralph Sr.), St. Martinville, LA ;two Sister-in-laws Ida Martinez Blacher, Texas City, Texas and Hilda Martinez, Breaux Bridge, LA; brother in-law Russell Martinez (Cynthia) Carencro, LA; special Nephew, Thaddeus Briscoe (Tanya) Katy, Texas and a host of family and friends.
He is preceded in death by his parents: 3 sisters, Dorothy Mitchell Lee, Henrietta Mitchell, and Gladys Mitchell; 1 brother Antoine Mitchell, Jr.; 1 nephew, Ralph Briscoe, Jr.
