Horace Thornton Obituary

Horace “Pop” Thornton, a resident of Erwinville, LA entered into eternal rest on November 18th, 2025, surrounded by his family and on his beloved late wife, Alice’s birthday. This was a reminder of their deep and enduring bond they shared and of their unbroken connection.

Horace was born on February 12th, 1936, in Glynn, LA to the late Charlie Thornton and Rose Clifford Thornton. Horace was educated at the St. Alma Baptist Church. He later earned a trade in Cement Finishing and worked through the Plasterers & Cement Masons Local 812 Union for many years. Horace was united in holy matrimony to the late Alice Mae Williams Thornton where they were married for nearly 60 years until her death in 2015.

Horace was such a courageous man, a loving father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend. He enjoyed gardening, hunting, watching westerns especially the reruns and giving all his grandchildren, nieces, and nephews all his love. He would keep a stash of cookies and honey buns or any type of snack he could find to offer you when you visited, you must leave with something in hand. He had such a big heart and was literally that man who would give you the shirt off his back.

His precious memories will be forever cherished by his loving daughter, Rose (Walter) Martin, of Erwinville, LA; 1 nephew who he reared as a son, Willie (Kim) Williams, Jr., of Baton Rouge, LA; 5 grandchildren who he adored, Lori (Houston) Wright,  Clarice (Curtis) Mason, Melanie Davis (Ray Fobb), Walter Martin, III (Gabrielle Dixon), all of Erwinville, LA; and Aletha Johnson, of Port Allen, LA; 13 great grandchildren who got all the cookies and honey buns, Devin and Dallas Wright; Kiersten, Curtis, Jr., Kylon, and Peyton Mason; Jalen and Jaliyah Ruffin; Joseph Hatfield, Jr.; Lailah and Lauryn Martin, all of Erwinville, LA; Destiny, Angela, Angel, and Miracle Foreman, all of Baton Rouge, LA; 19 great-great grandchildren who he gave all his pocket change too; 1 sister, Genieve Marks, of Port Allen, LA; 3 sister-in-laws, Celene Wiiliams-McClinton, of Greensburg, LA; Josienel Thornton and Veronica Williams, both of Baton Rouge, LA; friend, Earline Antoine and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Charlie and Rose Thornton; his beloved wife, Alice Mae Williams Thornton; son, James Williams; 6 sisters; and 4 brothers.

“And God shall wipe all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.” – Revelation 21:4
