We want to assure our community that we are doing our part in keeping everyone safe during this pandemic crisis (COVID-19).  Therefore, at this time gatherings are limited to 10 guests or less as mandated by the Governor of Louisiana.  Thus, these gatherings are limited to immediate family only.  Others may post condolences and sign online guest books.  At a later date, the family will have a memorial service to honor their loved one.  Please pray for this family and take care of yourselves and each other. John Edwards Goza Sr, was born on June 14, 1940 in Arkadelphia Arkansas. He departed this life on Friday, April 17, 2020.

John accepted Christ at an early age and became a member of Mt. Carmel Baptist Church of Baton Rouge, where she was a member of the Hospitality Ministry, Men’s Ministry and Male Chorus. He worked at Baton Rouge Water Company for 54 years.

John leaves to cherish her memories, his wife Mary Bell Smith Goza; sons, John Goza Jr. and Michael Goza; daughters, Annette (Rayfield) Penn, Maria Fisher, Angelina Varise, Jacqueline Varise and Melissa Wilkins all of Baton Rouge, LA; Walter (Flora) Shugart Jr. and James Shugart of Baton Rouge, LA and  Tommy Shugart Portland OR.,sister in-law Janice Smith of Baton Rouge, LA; brother in-law, John (Clara) B. Smith of Warner Robins, GA., Jerry Smith of Baton Rouge, LA and Leroy Smith of Gramercy LA, , and a host of grandchildren, nieces, nephews, family, godchildren and friends.

John is preceded in death by his daughter Vanessa Penn, sons, Jacob, Joseph & Charlie Goza; parents, E. L. Goza, Walter & Justine Shugart, aunts, Avenell Tesley and Leola Sandifer, uncles,  Charlie Tesley and Wesley Goza and a host of other aunts and uncles, brothers, Paul Johnson, Omen Shugart and Robert Goza; sisters, Mary Renchie, Carolyn Scott, Jeanette Cummings and Ruth Culbert, grandchildren, Natasha Penn and Latoya Varise

No time to cry don’t shed a tear I am with God In spirit I am here…I kept the Faith my spirit is light I am now at peace now I fought the good fight.
