Obituary

“God saw the road was getting rough, the hill was hard to climb: He gently closed those loving eyes, and whispered, “Peace Be Thine…”

 

Brother Sherman Joseph Smith, Jr. was born on January 24, 1956 to the union of the late Sherman Joseph Smith, Sr. and Susie Lee Hicks Smith in Maringouin, Louisiana. On Thursday, April 14, 2022, after a brief illness, he slipped away to be with the Lord.

“Toodie” accepted Christ at an early age at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church where he was an Alter Boy.

He was a 1974 graduate of Shady Grove High School, and a baseball star of Iberville Parish. His team went on to bring to Shady Grove a state championship title during his senior year. Later he went on to become a member of the United States Army. After his stent in the Army, in 1980 he became employed with the Union Pacific Railroad. He worked for (30) years before he retired.

“Toodie” was an avid gamesman. He loved hunting and fishing. He also enjoyed cooking wild game.

In 1989 he married the former Shelia Dickerson. To that union (2) children were blessed.

He leaves to mourn his passing, (2) Loving Daughters and Sons-in-law; Ewanyia Christophe (Roderick) Gaines of Lottie, Louisiana and Shermaine Smith (Charleson, Sr.) Clark of Addis, Louisiana, (2) Sons; Sherman J. Smith, III (Shannon Baise) of Lottie, Louisiana and Brandon C. Overton, Sr. of Dallas, Texas, Loving Mother; Susie Lee Smith of Maringouin, Louisiana, (8) Grandchildren; Darrion Christophe, Jaelin Overton, Kamryn Overton, Brandon Overton, II, Charleson Clark, Jr., Shaniya Morgan, Shatira Crump, and Sherman Smith IV, (3) Great-Grandchilren; Isabella Leduff, Karter Williams, and Jhanee Overton, A Devoted Sister; Wanda S. Mitchell of Maringouin, Louisiana, A Loving Brother and Sister-in-law; Kyle P. (Trina) Smith of Alexandria, Louisiana, (2) Nephews; Pascal Mitchell, II and Kyle P. Smith, Jr., (2) Nieces; Kymeshia and Kyla Smith, (2) Maternal Uncles; John Isadore Hicks Springfield, Illinois and Clyde Hicks, Florissant, Missouri, Special family friends; Shelia Fisher, Pascal Mitchell, I, Georgia Smith, Edward Veal, and Janson Scott, A host of other cousins, relatives, and friends.

He was preceded in death by his Father; Sherman Joseph Smith, Sr., Maternal Grandparents; John Vince Hicks and Henrietta Williams Hicks, Paternal Grandparents; Joseph Sherman Smith and Leora Butler Smith,
